Sufism, often referred to as the mystical dimension of Islam, is a spiritual path focused on the direct experience of God through personal devotion, asceticism, and contemplation. Originating within Islamic tradition, Sufism emphasizes inner purification, love for the divine, and moral conduct as means to achieve spiritual enlightenment. The term *Sufi* derives from the Arabic word *ṣūfī*, meaning "one who wears wool," referring to the ascetic lifestyle of early practitioners who wore simple, coarse garments.

Sufism is not a separate religion but a mystical interpretation of Islam, rooted in the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Sufi orders, known as *ṭarīqas* or *ṭuruq*, provide structured paths for spiritual development through rituals, dhikr (remembrance of God), and the guidance of a spiritual master (*shaykh* or *murshid*). Prominent Sufi orders include the Naqshbandi, Chishti, and Mevlevi (Whirling Dervishes), each with distinct practices and traditions.

Central to Sufi thought is the concept of *tawhid*, the oneness of God, and the belief in divine unity beyond anthropomorphic attributes. Sufis seek to transcend ego (*nafs*) through practices such as meditation, chanting, and self-discipline, aiming for a state of *fana* (annihilation in God) and eventual union with the divine (*wahdat al-wujud*). Many Sufi poets, such as Rumi and Jalaluddin Rumi, expressed these ideas through literature, blending mysticism with Persian and Arabic poetic traditions.

Sufism has also influenced other spiritual traditions, including Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism, through concepts of divine love and inner transformation. While historically widespread across the Islamic world, Sufism has faced both admiration and criticism, with some conservative Islamic groups viewing it as heretical due to its emphasis on experiential spirituality over rigid doctrinal adherence. Today, Sufism remains a vibrant and diverse movement, practiced by millions globally as a path to spiritual fulfillment within Islam.
