Subtenor is a historical voice category used chiefly in Baroque and early Classical opera and sacred music. It denotes a male singer whose range and tessitura sit between tenor and contralto, typically performing alto parts that were written for castrati or for high female voices. The designation reflects a practical labeling from the period rather than a formal modern fach.

Voice production and timbre for subtenors often relied on falsetto or light head voice, producing a bright, agile timbre suitable for high-lying lines. In practice, subtenors sang parts that today are frequently assigned to countertenors, mezzo-sopranos, or, when appropriate, high tenors. The term thus describes a historical rather than a standardized contemporary category.

Repertoire associated with subtenors is mainly from Baroque opera and oratorio, including roles and arias that require high male alto passages. With the decline of castrati and the shift in modern performance practice, many such parts are now performed by countertenors or female-sounding voices, depending on the production and the conductor’s approach. In some regions or ensembles, the term subtenor persists as a historical label or as a practical descriptor for a high male voice unable to reach the traditional tenor tessitura comfortably.
