substratområde

Substratområde denotes the realm of matter at lengths smaller than atoms. It includes elementary particles such as quarks and leptons, as well as composite particles like protons and neutrons, and the force carriers that interact between them. The phenomena here are described by quantum field theories, especially the Standard Model. Gravity is not part of that model and is considered separately at these scales.

Key constituents are quarks and leptons, together with gauge bosons (photons, gluons, W and Z bosons) that mediate forces. The Higgs boson provides a mechanism for mass. Composite subatomic particles such as protons and neutrons are made of quarks bound by gluons. The fundamental interactions are electromagnetic, strong, and weak; gravity is negligible at subatomic distances.

Scale and methods: distances around 10^-15 meters for nuclei, with smaller scales inside nucleons. The primary tools are particle accelerators, detectors, and experiments such as deep inelastic scattering and neutrino studies. Major milestones include the discovery of the electron, proton, neutron, quarks, and the Higgs boson.

Theoretical framework: quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, especially QED, QCD, and the electroweak theory. The Standard Model successfully describes known particles and interactions but does not include gravity and leaves open questions such as neutrino masses, dark matter, and matter–antimatter asymmetry.

Substratområde research drives technological advances and deepens understanding of the universe. Ongoing experiments seek to test current theories and search for physics beyond the Standard Model.
