Substantivklassystem, or noun class system, is a grammatical framework in which nouns are grouped into classes that determine agreement with other parts of speech. The concept covers two broad patterns: gender-based systems, where nouns are assigned to gender categories, and noun class systems in which lexical classes are marked by nominal prefixes and propagate concord through adjectives, determiners, and verbs.

In gender-based languages, grammatical gender is an abstract category associated with nouns. Each class typically requires agreement on determiners and adjectives, and sometimes influences pronoun reference. The number of genders varies across languages: some have two, others three or more. The gender of a noun may be arbitrary and not reliably predicted from meaning, though semantics often correlate with certain noun types.

In languages with explicit noun classes, such as many Bantu languages, every noun belongs to a class indicated by a prefix. The class information triggers concord markers on adjectives, verbs, and demonstratives, ensuring the whole noun phrase reflects the noun’s class. A language may have dozens of classes, with classification guided by semantics and historical development rather than a single rule.

Some European languages combine a limited gender system with agreement on adjectives and determiners, as in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and German. In other language families, the noun class system is a central organizing principle for morphology, shaping verb forms and sentence concord throughout the clause.
