Subproducts are secondary products that arise during the production or processing of a primary product. They are generated by the same operations, often as a result of chemical reactions, separation steps, or material transformations that are not the main objective of the process. Subproducts may have intrinsic value, require disposal, or be used as inputs for other manufacturing steps.

The terms subproduct, byproduct, and co-product are related but not interchangeable. A byproduct is typically a secondary output with relatively low economic value, produced incidentally during the manufacture of a main product. A co-product is another substantial product generated in a process that may have similar value to the primary product. Subproduct is a more general label that can emphasize secondary status or lower value, depending on context and industry.

Industries generate subproducts across a range of processes. In food and feed industries, milling can yield bran or germ as subproducts suitable for animal feed or ingredient use. In wood processing, lignin or tall oil can be recovered as byproducts for chemical or energy applications. In metal production, slags and dusts are byproducts or subproducts of smelting and refining. In oil refining and chemical processing, sulfur, light hydrocarbons, or spent solvents may emerge as subproducts that are reclaimed or sold for other uses.

Economic and environmental considerations influence how subproducts are treated. When feasible, subproducts are valorized to offset production costs, reduce waste, and support a circular economy. Management approaches include selling to other industries, converting to energy, or integrating subproduct streams into related production lines, with attention to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
