Submorphemic is a term used in linguistics to denote phenomena, analyses, or units that lie beneath the morpheme, the smallest meaningful unit of language. While morphemes carry meaning, submorphemic refers to subunits or processes that operate inside morphemes or at the interfaces between morphology and phonology. The term is not standardized and is mainly encountered in theoretical discussions that emphasize the internal structure of morphemes and their phonological realization.

In usage, submorphemic discussions may focus on morphophonological phenomena—how phonological rules apply within a bound morpheme, how stem-internal phonotactics shapes allomorphic realization, or how affixes exhibit internal structure that conditions surface form. The label is often a convenience rather than a distinct grammatical category; many linguists describe the same issues using morphophonology, allomorphy, phonology, or morpho-phonology rather than invoking submorphemic.

Because submorphemic is not widely standardized, its meaning can vary by author and field. It is most likely to appear in analytic work concerned with submorphemic structure, segmentation in computational morphology, or typological discussions about how morphemes encode internal phonological constraints.
