Submikrona is a term used in Indonesian and some other languages to describe objects, features, or phenomena whose dimensions are below one micrometer (10^-6 meters). In scientific contexts it is often used for the submicron scale, covering sizes from a few nanometers up to just under a micrometer. It appears in nanotechnology, materials science, and metrology.

Size range is approximately 1–999 nanometers in diameter. The nanoscale is typically 1–100 nm, while the submicron range extends to 999 nm. Characterization relies on SEM, TEM, AFM, and dynamic light scattering, among other methods.

Submikron particles occur in nature and industry, through combustion, grinding, milling, precipitation in synthesis, and polymerization. Common materials include silica, titania, other metal oxides, carbon black, metals, and polymer spheres used in dispersions and coatings.

Applications and properties: The high surface area-to-volume ratio of submikron particles leads to distinctive optical, catalytic, and reactive properties, aiding their use in coatings, catalysts, electronics, and drug delivery systems where size influences solubility and bioavailability.

Safety and regulation: Exposure to submicron particles can pose inhalation and cardiovascular risks; proper controls and regulatory limits apply in workplaces that handle powders or aerosols.

Etymology and usage: Sub- comes from Latin, mikron from Greek mikrós, meaning small. In English, submicron is more common, while submikrona appears in Indonesian and Malay technical texts.
