subjuguez

Subjuguez is the second-person plural present indicative form of the French verb subjuguer, and also the imperative form used to command a group to subjugate. The verb means to bring under domination, to subdue, or to exert control over someone or something, including lands, populations, or ideas.

Etymology: subjuguer comes from Latin subjugare, from sub- “under” and jugum “yoke.” The form subjuguez is built from the vous ending -ez.

Usage: In contemporary French, subjuguer is relatively formal and may appear in historical, political, or literary contexts. Subjuguez is encountered mainly as a direct address to a group (imperative) or as part of the narrative “vous subjuguez” (present indicative). The past participle is subjugué; the future is vous subjugerez; the present subjunctive: que vous subjugiez.

Examples: “Les armées ont subjugué les territoires ennemis.” “Elle subjugue les auditeurs par son habileté rhétorique.” “Subjuguez ces révoltes et vous rétablirez l’ordre.”
