Event- or memory-based toponyms recount episodes connected with a place, such as Santa Fe (Holy Faith) or Los Angeles (the Angels). Institutional or corporate names may become place names through sponsorship or association. Cultural or religious concepts, such as Philadelphia (brotherly love) or Ciudad de México (the concept of a city associated with Mexico), illustrate thematic subjects embedded in the name. The field also considers political and post-colonial dimensions, including how naming reflects power, memory, and contested heritage.

Methods involve philological etymology, archival and historical records, gazetteer analysis, and geographic information systems to map and compare name distributions. Researchers assess language contact, translation, and renaming processes, as well as the social and political contexts in which subject-based toponyms arise or change over time.
