A subconcept is a concept that is more specific than another concept within a hierarchical organization of knowledge. It represents a subordinate or hyponymic concept in relation to a broader concept, called the superconcept. For example, mammal is a subconcept of animal, and whale or bat are subconcepts of mammal. Subconcepts are connected through is-a (hyponym) relationships, and are commonly arranged in taxonomies or ontologies.
