Subühikute are the smaller or larger units that are derived from a base unit within a measurement system. They enable expressing quantities across a wide range of magnitudes without changing the fundamental reference unit. Subühikute are especially common in decimalized systems, where each step represents a fixed factor of ten or another simple ratio.

Subühikute are typically created by applying prefixes or by designating specially named units that are multiples or fractions of the base unit. In practice, they include units such as millimeters, centimeters, microseconds, and kilograms. The distinction between a subühik and an independent unit is mostly one of naming and constancy: subühikud are consistently tied to a base unit by a defined scale, whereas independent units stand alone (for example, liter as a unit of volume can be subdivided into subühikud like milliliters, but liter is not itself a subdivision of another unit).

In the International System of Units (SI), subühikud are most often formed by prefixes such as milli-, centi-, micro-, and kilo- attached to base units (metre, gram, second, etc.). This approach standardizes measurement across science, industry, and commerce, facilitating comparison and calculation. Some non-decimal or traditional systems also use subühikud known as derived units or composite units, which may involve different scaling factors.

History and usage: the concept emerged with decimalized measurement systems in the wake of the 18th and 19th centuries, aiming for uniformity and ease of calculation. Today, subühikute terminology and conventions vary by language, but the underlying idea remains central to precise measurement.
