Støvudtrækning is a term used to describe the engineering controls and practices designed to remove airborne dust from workplaces. In Danish usage, støvudtrækning denotes systems and methods that capture dust at or near its source, transport it through ductwork, and separate and collect the material in a central dust collector. The primary goals are to protect worker health, improve air quality, and prevent dust from accumulating on equipment and surfaces.

A typical støvudtrækning system consists of several components. Source-capture hoods or enclosures are placed at the point of dust generation, connected to ductwork that conveys the dust to a central collector. A fan or blower provides the necessary airflow. Separation stages may include a cyclone to remove larger particles, followed by a baghouse or cartridge filter to capture finer dust. Depending on the dust type, wet scrubbers or other technologies may be used. The collected material is discharged to a bin or silo for disposal or reuse.

There are two main approaches: source capture, which minimizes dust at the generation point, and general or dilution ventilation, which reduces dust levels in the broader space. The choice depends on the process, dust properties, energy considerations, and space constraints. Applications span woodworking, metalworking, stone and mineral processing, pharmaceuticals, and food production. Some dusts are combustible or toxic, creating explosion and health risks; systems are designed with grounding, anti-static measures, appropriate filtration, and compliance with local regulations (for example OSHA in the U.S. or ATEX in the EU).

Maintenance is essential for effectiveness and safety, including regular filter replacement, duct cleaning, and inspection of seals and fans. Performance is described by capture efficiency, airflow, and energy use.
