Steppområden, also known as steppes, are large areas of flat or rolling land with few trees, covered predominantly by grasses. These regions are typically found in temperate climates and are characterized by hot summers and cold winters. Steppes are often located in the interior of continents, far from oceanic influences, which contributes to their dry climate and extreme temperature fluctuations.

The vegetation in steppes is adapted to arid or semi-arid conditions, with deep root systems to access scarce water and survive droughts and fires. Grasses are the dominant plant life, but drought-resistant shrubs and herbs can also be present. Wildlife in steppes often includes grazing animals like horses, antelopes, and bison, along with their predators such as wolves and foxes. Birds like eagles and various ground-dwelling species are also common.

Steppes are found in various parts of the world, including the Eurasian Steppe, the Great Plains of North America, the Pampas of South America, and parts of Australia and Africa. Historically, steppes have been important grazing lands for livestock and have supported nomadic cultures. However, many steppes have been converted to agriculture, particularly for grain production, which has led to significant ecological changes and concerns about soil erosion and biodiversity loss. The term "steppe" itself originates from Russian and refers to these vast, treeless plains.
