StyVheter is a term used to describe the property of a material or object to resist deformation under applied forces. In Swedish technical language it encompasses what is commonly referred to as stiffness or rigidity. It is distinct from hardness, which describes resistance to surface indentation, and from elasticity in a broader sense, which concerns how a material returns to its original shape after deformation.

In material science, styvhet is quantified through elastic moduli. The most common measures are Young's modulus for axial stiffness, the shear modulus for resistance to shear, and the bulk modulus for resistance to uniform compression. These moduli relate stress to strain within the elastic (reversible) range of deformation and are expressed in pascals. The overall stiffness of a component depends on the material properties, its temperature, and its geometry.

Several factors influence styvhet. Material composition and microstructure determine intrinsic stiffness; temperature, aging, and humidity can alter it; loading rate and direction (anisotropy) may cause different responses along different axes. In engineering, dynamic stiffness is also important, reflecting how materials respond to time-varying loads.

Applications of styvhet knowledge include material selection, structural design, and reliability assessment in industries such as construction, automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics. In biomechanics and robotics, stiffness of tissues and joints or actuators affects performance and safety. Understanding styvhet helps balance strength, weight, energy absorption, and durability in engineered systems.
