stylisée

Stylisée is the feminine form of the French adjective stylisé, meaning stylized. It describes a visual or decorative approach in which forms are deliberately simplified, exaggerated, or otherwise rendered to emphasize style rather than strict naturalism. The term derives from the verb styliser, to stylize, with the feminine suffix -ée.

In usage, stylisée can describe artworks, illustrations, film and animation, design, and fashion. A stylisée image favors recognizable features presented in a non-l literal way, often to convey mood, iconography, or brand identity. It is distinct from realism, which aims for faithful representation, and from pure abstraction, which may remove recognizable features entirely.

Distinctions within stylization range from decorative to expressive. Decorative stylization emphasizes ornament and pattern, while expressive stylization uses exaggerated shapes or proportions to convey emotion or essence. In graphic design and poster art, stylisation frequently yields bold lines, simplified silhouettes, and limited color palettes. In animation and illustration, stylised styles help achieve consistency across scenes and enhance recognizability.

Examples of stylisée applications include art nouveau’s flowing, ornamented lines; manga and Western comics’ use of clean, simplified character forms; and modern logos that rely on minimal, stylised geometries. The term is commonly used in curatorial notes, catalog descriptions, and critical writing in both French and translated English contexts.
