It encompasses the framework chosen to answer a specific question, including how observations or interventions are organized, what data are collected, and how they are analyzed. In English-language literature, the equivalent concepts are usually called study design or designs.

The classification of studiedesignen typically falls into two broad categories: experimental and observational. Experimental designs include randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental approaches where the researcher actively assigns an intervention. Observational designs cover cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, and longitudinal investigations where the researcher observes natural conditions without randomization.
