strúktúr

Strúktúr is the Icelandic term for structure. It designates the arrangement and organization of parts within a system, and the relationships among those parts that give the system its properties and behavior. The concept is used across disciplines to explain how components fit together to form a whole and how changes in arrangement affect function.

Originating from the Latin structura and adopted into Icelandic as strúktúr, the term is widely used in a similar sense as the English word structure. In specialized fields, strúktúr carries technical meaning conditioned by the domain.

In mathematics and computer science, strúktúr refers to formal constructs consisting of elements and relations or operations, such as algebraic structures (groups, rings, fields) and data structures used for storing and retrieving information.

In linguistics, strúktúr denotes the organization of words and phrases in sentences—syntax and word order. In the natural and social sciences, it describes the arrangement of biological tissues, geological components, materials, organizations, or networks.

Analysis often involves describing the parts and their interrelations, identifying patterns, hierarchies, and constraints, and, in applied settings, assessing how a structure supports function, stability, or efficiency.
