A strømadapter, also known as a power adapter or power supply unit, is an external or internal electronic device that converts alternating current (AC) from a wall outlet to a direct current (DC) voltage required by electronic devices. This conversion is crucial because most electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, routers, and monitors, operate on DC power, while the standard household electrical supply is AC.

The primary function of a strømadapter is to step down the high AC voltage from the mains to a lower, usable DC voltage. This process typically involves several stages. First, a transformer reduces the AC voltage to a lower level. Then, a rectifier converts the alternating current into pulsating direct current. Finally, a filter smooths out the pulsations, and a voltage regulator ensures a stable and consistent DC output voltage.

Strømadaptere vary widely in their design, power output, and connector types. They can be small, compact units for charging mobile devices or larger, more robust units for powering computers or other demanding equipment. The connector type is critical, as it must match the input port of the device it is intended to power. Using an incorrect adapter can damage the device.

Modern strømadaptere often incorporate features like over-voltage protection, short-circuit protection, and over-temperature protection to safeguard both the adapter and the connected device.
