Strukturalizam is an intellectual movement that arose in France in the mid-20th century. It posits that the elements of human culture must be understood by reference to their relationship to a larger, overarching system or structure. This approach views phenomena not as isolated entities but as parts of a larger system, where meaning is derived from the relationships and differences between these elements.

Key to strukturalizam is the concept of the sign, famously developed by Ferdinand de Saussure. A sign consists of a signifier (the sound or image) and a signified (the concept it represents). The relationship between these two is arbitrary, meaning there is no inherent connection between the word "tree" and the actual tree itself. Meaning arises from the difference between signs within a linguistic system. For example, the meaning of "hot" is understood in contrast to "cold."

Strukturalizam influenced a wide range of disciplines, including linguistics, anthropology, literary criticism, sociology, and philosophy. In anthropology, Claude Lévi-Strauss applied structuralist principles to analyze kinship systems and myths, identifying underlying universal structures in human thought. Literary critics used it to examine narratives and poetry, looking for recurring patterns and structures that shape meaning. The movement emphasized the impersonal and systematic nature of language and culture, often downplaying the role of individual agency or historical context. While influential, strukturalizam also faced criticism for its perceived determinism and neglect of individual experience and historical change.
