Streetcar refers to a rail vehicle that operates on tracks embedded in city streets. It is typically powered by electricity drawn from overhead wires through a trolley pole or a pantograph, with the return circuit usually via the rails. Streetcars share streets with other traffic and often run in mixed traffic, though some routes use lanes or dedicated rights-of-way.

The modern streetcar emerged from earlier horse-drawn streetcars. The first practical electric streetcar was developed by Frank J. Sprague and began service in Richmond, Virginia, in 1888, marking a turning point for urban transit. Electric streetcar networks proliferated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, enabling higher speeds and more reliable service, and many cities replaced horsecars and cable cars. From the mid-20th century, buses and cars reduced their networks, but revival began in the 1980s and continues in many cities.

Streetcars vary in configuration. Some are single-ended with a driving cab at one end and loops or wyes to reverse direction; others are double-ended or bidirectional. Vehicles can be low- or high-floor to accommodate accessibility requirements. Power is normally supplied at around 600–750 volts DC via overhead lines; some modern networks use ground-level power or battery-assisted segments. Track gauges and vehicle sizes vary by city, with systems operating as traditional streetcars or as light-rail services in more segregated alignments.

Today streetcars form part of many urban transit systems, offering moderate capacity, relatively low emissions, and the potential for urban renewal through street activation. Heritage streetcar operations preserve historic vehicles and educate the public about transit history.
