Streaming distribution is the delivery of multimedia content over a network using streaming techniques to begin playback as data arrives. It enables on-demand and live content to be consumed without full file download and is typically powered by a distributed network of servers and caches. The goal is to move content from origin servers to end users efficiently, minimizing startup delay and buffering while preserving quality.

A typical streaming distribution architecture includes an origin or ingest server that stores masters and an encoding/transcoding pipeline, an edge cache or content delivery network, and a player at the end user. The content is delivered in short, segmented files and described by a manifest file (for example, an M3U8 for HLS or an MPD for DASH), which allows a client to request appropriate segments based on current network conditions.

Common delivery approaches are on-demand streaming, where viewers select content from a catalog, and live streaming, where real-time or near real-time broadcasts are distributed to many viewers. Adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) is widely used to adjust video quality dynamically by selecting different segment bitrates, buffers, and resolutions according to available bandwidth.

Security and rights management play a role, with techniques such as DRM, secure tokens, and geo-blocking to control access. Operational considerations include latency, cache efficiency, load balancing, multi-CDN strategies, and monitoring for quality of experience (QoE) metrics like startup time and rebuffering rates.

Streaming distribution enables services from entertainment platforms to software updates and gaming streams, making scalable delivery to diverse networks possible.
