stratosfääristä translates to "stratospheric" in English and refers to something belonging to or located within the stratosphere. The stratosphere is the second layer of Earth's atmosphere, situated above the troposphere and below the mesosphere. It extends from the top of the troposphere, about 7 to 20 kilometers (4 to 12 miles) above the Earth's surface, up to an altitude of about 50 kilometers (31 miles).

A key characteristic of the stratosphere is the presence of the ozone layer, which absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This absorption process causes the temperature to increase with altitude in the stratosphere, a contrast to the troposphere where temperature decreases with height. This temperature inversion plays a significant role in atmospheric circulation.

The stratospheric air is very dry and much thinner than in the troposphere. Due to its stable nature, characterized by minimal vertical mixing, pollutants or particles introduced into the stratosphere can remain there for extended periods. This property makes it a subject of interest for atmospheric scientists studying phenomena like the spread of volcanic aerosols or the impact of human-made substances on the ozone layer.

The term "stratospheric" can also be used metaphorically to describe something very high, elevated, or perhaps even out of reach, similar to how "stratospheric ambitions" might imply grand and far-reaching goals. However, its primary scientific meaning relates directly to the atmospheric layer.
