Strandmiljø is the coastal environment where land and sea meet and interact. It encompasses a range of habitats along coastlines, including beaches, sand and gravel dunes, rocky shores, estuaries, mudflats, salt marshes, and coastal forests. The strandmiljø is highly dynamic, shaped by waves, tides, currents, wind, and seasonal climatic variations. Its boundaries can shift with storms and long-term changes such as sea-level rise.

The physical characteristics of strandmiljø arise from processes of sediment transport, erosion, and accretion. Wave action and tidal currents move sediment along shores, creating and reshaping dunes and beaches. In estuaries, freshwater mixes with seawater, forming brackish zones that support unique communities. Intertidal areas alternate between submersion and exposure, hosting specialized organisms adapted to rapid environmental changes.

Biological communities in strandmiljø are diverse and include pioneer plants that stabilize dunes, salt-tolerant vegetation, invertebrates such as mollusks and crustaceans, fish in estuaries, and bird populations that feed along shorelines and mudflats. These habitats provide feeding, breeding, and resting grounds for many species, as well as important nursery areas for commercially significant fish and shellfish.

Ecosystem services from strandmiljø include protection against coastal erosion and storm surges, water filtration and nutrient cycling, carbon storage in vegetation, and recreational, cultural, and aesthetic value. They also support fisheries and tourism economies.

Threats to strandmiljø arise from human activity and climate change, including coastal development, pollution, trampling of dunes, and more intense storms and sea-level rise. Conservation and management approaches emphasize integrated coastal zone planning, habitat restoration (such as dune stabilization with native vegetation), protection of critical areas, sustainable tourism, and monitoring to balance ecological integrity with human use.
