Stoikiikkaan, often translated as Stoicism, is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC. The name derives from the painted colonnade, or stoa poikile, on which Zeno and his followers were accustomed to meet. Stoicism teaches that virtue is the only good and that the external things like health, wealth, and reputation are indifferent. The goal of Stoic philosophy is to live in accordance with nature, which means living rationally and with virtue. Stoics believe that by controlling one's reactions to external events and focusing on what is within one's control, such as one's judgments, desires, and actions, one can achieve eudaimonia, a state of flourishing or living well.
