Stikkontakter are fixed electrical outlets that provide a connection point for appliances to a building’s electrical system. They allow devices to draw power by inserting a plug into the socket, thereby supplying alternating current from the mains. In Europe and much of Scandinavia, stikkontakter typically operate at about 230 volts and 50 hertz, with common current ratings ranging from 10 to 16 amperes. The most common designs in Nordic countries are grounded sockets based on Schuko (Type F) or hybrid Type E/F, which can accept both CEE 7/7 plugs. These outlets usually feature two round holes for live and neutral, and grounding through side contacts or a central earth pin, depending on the variant.

Safety and standards: Outlets are manufactured to meet European standards such as EN 60884-1, and installations must maintain proper earthing and overcurrent protection. In modern homes, residual-current devices (RCDs) or earth-leakage protection are commonly required, and many outlets include tamper-resistant or child-protection features. Weatherproof or splashproof variants are used in kitchens, bathrooms, outdoors, or damp environments.

Installation and use: Stikkontakter are mounted in electrical boxes within walls or furniture and wired into the building’s distribution circuit by fixed conductors. They should be installed by licensed electricians in accordance with national and local electrical codes, and paired with appropriate circuit protection. In addition to standard sockets, there are variants with USB ports, energy-saving features, or smart-controlled functionality, but the basic stikkontakt remains the primary connection point for most household appliances.
