Stereoäänessä, commonly referred to as stereo sound, is a method of sound reproduction that creates a sense of directionality and immersion by using two or more independent audio channels. This contrasts with monaural sound, which uses only one channel. The core principle of stereo is to reproduce sounds from different locations within a perceived soundscape, mimicking how humans naturally hear with two ears.

In a typical stereo playback system, two separate audio signals are fed to two loudspeakers, one for the left channel and one for the right. These loudspeakers are positioned to the left and right of the listener. By varying the volume and content of each channel, a listener can perceive sounds originating from different points between or even outside the speakers. This spatial effect, known as the stereo image, can create a feeling of depth, width, and realism in the audio experience.

The development of stereo sound began in the early 20th century, with practical applications emerging in the mid-20th century. It has since become the standard for music recording, film soundtracks, and broadcasting, significantly enhancing the listening experience by adding a spatial dimension to audio. Advanced techniques like multi-channel surround sound build upon the principles of stereo to create even more encompassing sound environments.
