Stepsanding refers to a process of sanding wooden steps, typically stairs, in a methodical manner to achieve a smooth and even surface. This is often done as a preparatory step before applying a finish such as paint, stain, or varnish. The sanding process removes old finishes, imperfections, and minor damage from the wood.

The technique involves using sandpaper of progressively finer grits. Starting with a coarser grit sandpaper, usually around 60 to 80 grit, removes significant surface material and any deep scratches or old coatings. Once the initial sanding is complete, the grit is gradually increased. Medium grits, such as 100 to 120, are used to smooth out the marks left by the coarser grit. Finally, fine grits, typically 150 to 220 or even higher, are employed to achieve a very smooth finish that is ready for the final coating.

Proper stepsanding requires attention to detail. It is important to sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid creating visible scratches. For steps, this means sanding along the length of the tread and riser. Power sanding tools like orbital sanders or belt sanders can expedite the process, but care must be taken to avoid over-sanding or creating an uneven surface. Hand sanding may be necessary for detailed areas or to ensure a consistent finish. Thorough cleaning to remove all dust between grits is crucial for an optimal result.
