Steppeområdene, often referred to as steppes, are vast, treeless grasslands that are predominantly found in temperate regions. These areas are characterized by their semi-arid climate, with moderate rainfall that is insufficient to support extensive forest growth. Instead, the landscape is dominated by grasses, herbs, and scattered shrubs. Steppes are typically found in large continental interiors, far from moderating oceanic influences.

Geographically, extensive steppe regions are found in Eurasia, particularly across the Pontic-Caspian steppe, stretching from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. North America has its own version in the Great Plains, and South America features the Pampas. These environments have historically played a significant role in human history, often serving as migratory routes for nomadic peoples and as fertile grounds for agriculture and livestock grazing.

The soil in steppe areas is often very fertile, rich in humus due to the decomposition of grasses over long periods. This fertility makes steppes highly valuable for agriculture, though they can be susceptible to drought and erosion if not managed sustainably. The biodiversity of steppes, while seemingly uniform, includes a variety of grasses adapted to dry conditions and a range of animals, from rodents and insects to larger herbivores and their predators. The climate can experience significant temperature fluctuations between seasons, with hot summers and cold winters.
