The term is used in Danish visual arts, photography, film, and design to describe a photograph or illustration that evokes feelings such as melancholy, nostalgia, tranquility, or tension.

The concept developed in the early twentieth century alongside the rise of modernist photography and cinema, when practitioners sought to move beyond simple documentation to create expressive visual narratives. Danish photographer Svend M. Mogensen popularised the form in the 1920s and 1930s with surreal landscape shots that used lighting, composition, and long exposure to suggest a dreamlike state.

In contemporary usage, stemningsbilleder are common in mood boards for film production, advertising, and interior design. They inform colour palettes, lighting schemes, and thematic direction before a full project begins. Photographers such as Erik Bøbrich and designers at the Danish architecture firm BIG use the technique to test emotional resonance across different design proposals.

While not strictly a genre, stemningsbillede remains an important tool for visual storytelling, enabling creators to pre‑visualise an experience and guide viewers toward a particular emotional response. The practice underscores the idea that imagery can function as an emotional map, guiding interpretation before context is fully revealed.
