Steererputken, or steerer tube in English, is a cylindrical tube that forms part of a bicycle fork. It extends upward through the head tube and provides the interface for the headset and handlebars, enabling steering. The steerer tube works together with the headset bearings to allow the front wheel to rotate relative to the frame.

The length and diameter of the steerer tube determine how the cockpit is sized, including stack height and spacers under the stem. For threadless systems, the top cap and spacers preload the headset, and the stem clamps onto the steerer. For threaded systems, the headset is secured with locknuts. The steerer tube must be cut to the correct length, leaving enough material above the stem for the top cap or spacers, while ensuring the crown race can be installed at the fork crown.

Steerer tubes come in several forms. Straight steerer tubes have a constant outer diameter along their length, with common diameters around 1 1/8 inches (28.6 mm) or 1 inch (25.4 mm). Tapered steerer tubes begin with a larger diameter at the top (often 1 1/8 inches) and transition to a larger diameter near the crown (commonly 1.5 inches, 38.1 mm). The term also implies compatibility with different headsets and headtube standards.

Materials used for steerer tubes include steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber, each offering different strength-to-weight characteristics and ride qualities. The bottom of the steerer accommodates the crown race, and must be properly seated during installation.

Care and safety: avoid cutting too short, deburr edges, and ensure correct installation torque on the headset. Inspect for damage after impacts, and replace a compromised steerer tube to maintain frame integrity.
