Staðsetningin is the definite form of the Icelandic noun staðsetning, meaning the location, placement, or setting of something. The term is used in several contexts, including geography, planning, and discourse analysis, but it is most common in linguistic discussions about how items are positioned within a sentence or larger text.

Etymology and sense. The word combines staður (place, location) with -setning, the noun-forming element indicating an arrangement or setting. The definite ending -in marks it as a specific or previously mentioned location or placement. In everyday Icelandic, staðsetningin can refer to a physical location as well as to the way something is arranged or situated in a given context.

Icelandic word order allows for variation, and speakers often use fronting or relocation of phrases to signal focus, topic, or contrast. For example, placing a time phrase at the beginning of a sentence can highlight temporal context: “Í dag fer ég til vinnu,” versus a neutral order like “Ég fer til vinnu í dag.” These alt-erations illustrate the role of placement in conveying focus and discourse flow, which falls under the umbrella of staðsetningin in grammar.
