Startnodes, or start nodes, are designated starting points used to initiate computation, traversal, or processing in networks, graphs, and related models. The term is applied across disciplines, with the concrete meaning varying by context but generally describing where an activity begins.

In graph theory and computer science, a start node is typically a vertex from which a search or traversal starts. When multiple sources exist, algorithms may initialize from several start nodes in a multi-source configuration. In directed graphs, a common interpretation is that a start node is a source—often a vertex with no incoming edges—but the term can also refer more broadly to any node chosen as the initial point for a given algorithm or procedure.

In pathfinding and routing, the start node defines the origin for computing distances and constructing paths. The resulting route is evaluated relative to this origin, and different start nodes can yield different optimal paths or visitation orders.

In workflow, dataflow, and process modeling, start nodes designate the entry points where data enters the system or where tasks begin. In such contexts, start nodes help establish the initial state of a model and influence subsequent propagation and scheduling.

In graph design and analysis, start nodes are contrasted with end or sink nodes, which absorb flow, terminate processes, or represent final states. Proper identification of start nodes is important for ensuring reachability, coverage, and efficient computation in large or complex networks.
