stapledown

Stapledown is a flooring installation method in which the floor covering is fastened to the subfloor using staples rather than nails or adhesive. The term is most commonly used in the installation of carpet and some resilient floors, and in certain commercial settings where speed and ease of replacement are valued.

In carpet stapledown, a cushioning underlayment is laid on the prepared subfloor, and the padding (and sometimes the carpet) is secured with staples from a pneumatic stapler. Staples may penetrate the cushion and into the subfloor, with perimeter fasteners or a tackless strip providing a boundary hold for the carpet edge. In some forms, the carpet is stapled directly through the pad to the subfloor without an edge strip, with seams joined and trimmed to fit.

Advantages of stapledown include faster installation, easier removal and replacement, and lower upfront cost compared with some adhesive or nail-down methods. It can be well suited to temporary or semi-permanent installations and to certain commercial settings with heavy foot traffic. Disadvantages include the potential for staple shadows or dimples in the surface, risk of damaging thin subfloors if staples are over-driven, and limitations on the types of carpet or padding that work well. The method may also have a shorter lifespan under very heavy use and is less common for high-end residential work.

Beyond carpet, stapledown can refer to stapling engineered or resilient floor panels to a subfloor using a compatible staple length, typically in systems designed for quick installation and removal.
