Stalowa is the feminine form of the Polish adjective stalowy, meaning “steel” or “made of steel.” It is used to describe things that are composed of steel or have a steel-like quality, and appears in many Polish terms and phrases such as stalowa rama (steel frame), stalowa konstrukcja (steel construction), or stalowa brama (steel gate).

As part of proper names, the element stalowa may occur in toponyms, especially in reference to places connected with the steel industry.

The best-known use is in Stalowa Wola, a city in south-eastern Poland, in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. The city was founded in the 1930s as part of the Central Industrial Region and grew around a steelworks, planned as an industrial town. The plant, Huta Stalowa Wola, became central to its economy and helped shape the region’s development. The name of the city reflects its industrial heritage, with “Stalowa” pointing to steel production and “Wola” a historical toponym often associated with a settlement with privileges or a sense of freedom.

In contemporary usage, stalowa appears in various compound nouns and in industrial and architectural contexts. The term remains common in Polish, but as a stand-alone noun it is primarily encountered as part of phrases or place names rather than as a distinct entity.
