Stabwerke, or stabwerk structures, are a class of load-bearing frameworks composed of straight members connected at joints to form a geometry that primarily resists loads through axial forces in the members (tension or compression). In many designs the joints are treated as pins, allowing rotation and simplifying the transfer of forces to the truss members. This type of construction is valued for its efficiency in carrying loads with relatively lightweight materials.

In practice, stabwerke rely on triangulated configurations to provide rigidity. Common planar forms include Pratt, Howe, and Warren trusses, which use triangular subassemblies to transfer loads and prevent lateral displacement. Materials range from timber and steel to modern composites, with the choice driven by strength, stiffness, durability, and fabrication considerations. Stabwerke can be used as standalone frameworks or as components of larger structures, such as roof systems, bridges, towers, and gantries.

Analysis of stabwerke traditionally employs methods of joints and sections to determine member forces, assuming members act axially and joints are ideally pinned. The system’s stability depends on the relationship between the number of members, joints, and supports; planar trusses are statically determinate when m = 2j − 3 (for simple cases), with more members leading to indeterminacy. Designers must account for buckling in compression members, joint rigidity, and connection details, which influence overall stiffness and safety.
