Stabsfunksjon is a term encountered in some Norwegian mathematical texts to denote a function that has constant values on intervals and changes value at one or more discrete points. In English-language mathematics, such functions are commonly called step functions or piecewise constant functions, with the Heaviside function as a well-known special case.

Formally, a stabsfunksjon on the real line is a function f: R -> R that is constant on each member of a partition of R into intervals, with possible jump discontinuities at a (finite or countable) set of breakpoints. The simplest example is the Heaviside step function H, defined by H(x) = 0 for x < 0 and H(x) = 1 for x ≥ 0. More generally, one may have f(x) = c1 on x < a and f(x) = c2 on x ≥ a, or a finite sum of constants on subintervals.

Properties of stabsfunksjoner include being piecewise constant, having discontinuities only at the breakpoints, and having derivative zero almost everywhere in the distributional sense. In integration, the integral over an interval is the sum of each constant value times the length of the subintervals with that value.

Applications of step functions are common in signal processing, digital control, quantization, and as simple models of threshold behavior in statistics and economics. They also serve as basic building blocks in approximation theory and in the construction of more complex functions via expansions.
