squeacStorage

squeacStorage is a distributed storage platform designed to support large-scale, cloud-native workloads. It aims to provide durable, scalable storage with a modern API surface and modular components that can operate across on-premises and public cloud environments. The system emphasizes data integrity, flexible deployment options, and performance through tiering and erasure coding.

The architecture centers on a set of loosely coupled components: API gateways, storage nodes, and a metadata service. Clients interact via a Squeac-compatible API or a REST interface that mirrors common object storage patterns. Data are divided into chunks and encoded with erasure coding across multiple storage nodes, enabling high fault tolerance with lower storage overhead than simple replication. The metadata service, referred to as the squeacIndex, tracks object metadata, versions, and data placement policies, and it provides support for snapshots and point-in-time restores.

Key features include object versioning and locking, encryption at rest and in transit, multi-region replication, and lifecycle management. It supports deduplication, configurable storage backends (local disks, remote object stores, or faster SSD tiers), and a flexible consistency model that can be tuned for different deployment needs. The system offers multi-tenant isolation, rich monitoring, and observability through standard metrics and logs.

Deployment and operation: squeacStorage is designed for containerized environments and runs well on Kubernetes, with deployment patterns that support both single-cluster and multi-region configurations. It provides adapters for common cloud and on-premises storage backends, enabling gradual migration from legacy storage systems while maintaining data integrity and accessibility.

Status: as a conceptual or open-source project, ongoing development focuses on interoperability with existing object storage ecosystems and ease of operation across diverse infrastructure.
