The instrumental plural form spoloenstvami is used in contexts that involve actions or relations with or through communities. Broadly, spoločenstvá are characterized by a sense of belonging, shared norms, mutual aid, and coordinated activities among members.

They come in several forms. Geographical communities are tied to a place, such as neighborhoods, villages, or towns. Interest-based communities organize around common goals or activities, such as clubs, professional associations, or hobby groups. Cultural, ethnic, religious, or linguistic communities preserve shared heritage and practices. Online communities gather dispersed members through digital platforms, often transcending physical boundaries.

Functions include socialization and peer support, knowledge and resource exchange, cultural transmission, collective advocacy, and the provision of social capital that helps members cope with life challenges. Membership tends to be voluntary, with governance often informal but can include formal leadership bodies, decision-making assemblies, or elected committees.

Legal recognition varies by country. In many systems, spoločenstvá or their Slovak equivalents may register as associations, foundations, or non-governmental organizations, with obligations around transparency, accounting, and governance. They may receive funding from members, donations, grants, or public programs and can serve as partners for local authorities in service delivery or civic initiatives.
