Spolknapp is the Swedish term for a toilet flush button, a control device that activates the release of water from the toilet cistern into the bowl to carry away waste. The knop is part of the flushing mechanism and is typically located on or near the top of the cistern, though some models use a side-mounted or integrated plate.

Actuation and design vary. In modern toilets the spolknapp is usually a push button or a pair of buttons built into a flush plate. Pressing the button mechanically lifts a flush valve, allowing water to flow from the cistern into the bowl. Some toilets use a lever or a soft-touch panel, but the concept remains the same: convert a user action into a valve opening.

Types of flushing systems are commonly distinguished by water volume. Single-flush buttons release a standard amount of water per press. Dual-flush systems use two discharge volumes, typically a smaller amount for liquid waste and a larger amount for solid waste, aiming to improve water efficiency.

Mechanisms and maintenance: A flush system comprises the cistern, flush valve (or flapper), fill valve, and associated seals. Dual-flush variants may use two different openings or a split button. Common issues include worn seals, a sticking button, or a running toilet from a mis-sealed flush valve. Regular inspection and occasional replacement of seals or the flush valve help maintain reliability.

Standards and efficiency: Water usage per flush varies by design and region. Older systems may use 9–12 liters per flush, while modern dual-flush models typically target lower overall water use, often around 3–6 liters per flush depending on the model and local regulations.
