Spoelformatie is a Dutch term that appears in some scientific texts to denote the formation of spores by microorganisms. In modern Dutch, the standard terms are sporenvorming or sporulatie, with spoelformatie sometimes used as an older or less common variant. The concept refers to sporulation, a developmental program that enables certain bacteria and fungi to survive adverse conditions.

In bacteria, sporulation occurs when nutrients are scarce. A regulatory cascade is activated that reorganizes cell growth to generate a dormant, highly resistant spore inside a mother cell. The mature spore features a dehydrated core surrounded by a cortex and a protective coat, giving resistance to heat, desiccation, radiation, and many chemicals. Spores germinate when conditions improve, reactivating metabolism and cell division.

In fungi, spores are produced as part of sexual or asexual reproduction and primarily support dispersal and survival across environments. In plants and algae that form spores, spores are integral to life cycles and propagation, enabling spread to new habitats.

Spoelformatie is therefore mainly a biological term encountered in scientific contexts. It is closely related to, but distinct from, general reproduction or dispersal, sharing the overarching goal of ensuring survival and propagation under variable environmental conditions.
