The concept covers acute illnesses and injuries that require rapid assessment, stabilization and treatment to prevent deterioration or death, and cannot safely wait for routine care.

In practice, patients arriving at the spoedeisende afdeling undergo triage to determine urgency. A triage nurse or physician assesses vital signs and symptoms to prioritize those with life-threatening conditions. The ED team provides initial stabilization, followed by diagnostic testing such as laboratory work, imaging, and targeted specialist input as needed. Treatments may include pain relief, intravenous fluids, medications, wound care, and, if necessary, emergency procedures or surgery. Many cases are resolved with discharge and instructions for follow-up, while others require observation or admission to another hospital department.

Staff and organization typically include emergency physicians, resident doctors, specialized nurses, paramedics, radiology and laboratory staff, and on-call specialists. The department operates around the clock and coordinates with ambulance services and primary care providers to ensure timely access to appropriate care. While the SEH handles urgent matters, non-urgent health issues are generally directed to general practitioners or after-hours clinics.
