Spirometriassa is the Finnish term for spirometry, a common pulmonary function test that measures the amount and speed of air a person can inhale and exhale. The test evaluates lung volumes, capacities, and flow rates, providing objective data about respiratory performance.

The primary indications for spirometriassa include the diagnosis and monitoring of obstructive airway diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchiectasis; assessment of restrictive lung conditions; evaluation of possible lung impairment after thoracic surgery; and screening of occupational lung disease. It may also be part of pre‑operative medical evaluation or to investigate unexplained dyspnea.

During the procedure the patient sits upright and wears a nose clip. A calibrated mouthpiece connects to a spirometer. The patient takes a deep breath and then exhales forcefully and steadily until no more air can be expelled. The test is repeated several times to ensure reproducibility. Key measurements are forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV₁), and the ratio FEV₁/FVC, which helps distinguish obstructive from restrictive patterns.

Interpretation follows the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society guidelines. Values are compared to predicted norms based on age, sex, height, and ethnicity; a ratio below 0.70 at 80% of predicted FVC often indicates obstruction, while a reduced FVC with a normal ratio suggests restriction.

Spirometriassa is well tolerated and non‑invasive, but contraindications include recent thoracic surgery, uncontrolled cardiac arrhythmias, or pregnancy in the early trimesters. Patients are advised to avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, and smoking the day before testing. Proper training of the operator is essential for accurate results and patient safety.
