Spinaalanesteesia, also known as spinal anesthesia or subarachnoid block, is a regional anesthesia technique used to numb a portion of the body, typically the lower extremities and abdomen. It involves injecting a local anesthetic agent into the cerebrospinal fluid within the subarachnoid space of the spinal canal. This space is located between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater, which are two of the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The anesthetic drug works by blocking nerve impulses in the spinal cord, preventing pain signals from reaching the brain.

The procedure is usually performed with the patient in a seated or lying position. After sterilizing the skin and administering a local anesthetic to numb the injection site, a fine needle is inserted into the lower back, typically between the third and fourth or fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae. Once the needle enters the subarachnoid space, a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid is often seen to flow back, confirming correct placement. The anesthetic medication is then injected.

Spinaalanesteesia is commonly used for surgical procedures such as cesarean sections, orthopedic surgeries of the lower limbs, and urological procedures. Its advantages include rapid onset of anesthesia, dense muscle relaxation, and a lower risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting compared to general anesthesia. However, potential side effects can include a temporary drop in blood pressure (hypotension), headache following the procedure, and temporary difficulty with urination. Serious complications are rare but can include nerve damage or infection. The duration and extent of the block can be influenced by the type and dose of anesthetic used.
