A spectrometrist is a scientist who uses spectroscopy to measure and interpret spectra in order to determine the properties of matter or radiation sources. They may work in chemistry laboratories analyzing compounds, physics or astronomy laboratories measuring cosmic spectra, or environmental and industrial settings monitoring materials and processes.

Core duties include designing experiments, operating spectroscopy equipment such as spectrometers, spectrographs, FTIR, Raman, UV–Vis, fluorescence spectrometers, or even mass spectrometers in some contexts. They collect and analyze spectral data, calibrate instruments, apply baseline corrections, and perform quantitative analysis. Spectrometrists interpret spectral features to identify substances, determine concentrations, or infer physical properties like temperature or molecular structure. In astronomy, they may derive redshifts, chemical abundances, or kinematic information from observed spectra.

Education and skills typically involve a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, astronomy, or a related field, with many roles requiring graduate study or specialized training. Proficiency in data analysis and modeling, along with programming ability (for example Python or MATLAB) and experience with data processing software, is common. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and meticulous documentation are essential, as is familiarity with instrumentation and safety practices.

Work environments vary from academic and government laboratories to private industry, hospitals, pharmaceutical firms, and field sites for environmental monitoring or astronomical observations. Spectrometrists contribute to material characterization, quality control, drug development, environmental stewardship, and fundamental research through rigorous, reproducible spectral analysis.
