Spatialisation, also spelled spatialization, is a term used across disciplines to describe the process of imposing or representing spatial characteristics on something. In audio and music contexts, it refers to the creation and manipulation of sound within a three-dimensional space. In the social sciences and humanities, it denotes how social, cultural, and political processes are distributed through and produced by space.

Audio spatialisation involves techniques to place and move sound sources in relation to listeners. Common approaches include stereo and surround panning, ambisonics, object-based audio, and binaural rendering. Systems may be channel-based, involve speaker arrays, or use 3D representations that rely on head-related transfer functions and motion tracking. Key cues include interaural time and level differences and spectral filtering by the listener’s ears. Applications span music production, film and theater sound design, virtual reality, gaming, and telepresence.

In social theory, spatialisation analyzes how spaces are made meaningful and how social relations, institutions, and power are organized in and through space. It considers urban form, migration, ritual landscapes, digital environments, and the role of space in shaping identity and access to resources. Methodologically, it often combines geographic analysis with cultural critique and can involve mapping, phenomenology, or critical theory.
