Sparplattformar, Swedish for spar platforms, are offshore petroleum production facilities designed for deep water. They consist of a single, tall vertical hull—called the spar—anchored to the seabed by a mooring system. The topsides, housing processing equipment, power, and accommodations, are located at or near the top of the spar, with risers connecting subsea wells to the platform.

Design and operation centers on stability and motion isolation. The spar hull provides a large vertical inertia and a favorable buoyancy distribution, which helps dampen waves and reduce motion transfer to the topsides. Most sparplattformar are fixed to the seabed with multiple mooring lines; some variants have auxiliary stabilizers or use hybrid approaches. Riser systems run from subsea production trees to the topsides, enabling production and injection while maintaining fluid integrity and safety.

Deployment and use follow a deep-water specialization. Sparplattformar gained prominence in deep-water basins where conventional jacket platforms are impractical, with notable deployments in the Gulf of Mexico and other offshore regions. They are chosen for their high vertical stability, compact deck footprint, and substantial production capacity, but require complex installation, substantial mooring work, and higher maintenance costs compared with shallower fixed platforms.

Variants and evolution include different spar hull forms and integration with other floating or fixed systems. Ongoing developments focus on reducing installation risk and cost, improving riser technologies, and extending applicability to ultra-deep waters and challenging environments.
