The sparapet was the title given to high-ranking generals in the army of the medieval kingdoms of Armenia, particularly during the period of the Bagratuni dynasty. The term is derived from the Old Armenian word "sparapet," which is a combination of "spar" meaning "general" or "commander," and "pet" which is an epithet used to denote a high-ranking official.

Historically, the sparapet held a status similar to that of a chief of staff or commander-in-chief, being responsible for the overall strategy and operations of the army. They often served as advisors to the king and were entrusted with important tasks such as mobilizing troops, coordinating logistics, and negotiating with neighboring kingdoms. In addition to their military functions, sparapets also held significant political influence and were often responsible for collecting taxes, administering justice, and maintaining law and order in the kingdom.

Throughout the medieval period, notable sparapets played significant roles in Armenian history. Some of the most notable sparapets include Gregor Mamikonian, who served as a powerful general and statesman during the reign of King Stepanos-Bagratuni I, and Yeghishe Vardapet, who fought against the Arab conquest of Armenia and later served as the crown prince's governor.

The office of sparapet declined in importance during the 12th century, as the Bagratuni dynasty weakened and eventually collapsed under the pressure of Mongol invasions. Despite its eventual decline, the institution of sparapet left a lasting legacy in Armenian military and administrative structures, with many later kingdoms and empires adopting similar titles and roles for their high-ranking generals.
