Spamlike is an adjective used to describe content, messages, or behavior that resembles spam in its characteristics, but does not necessarily meet formal criteria for spam. In common usage, spamlike material is unsolicited, mass-distributed, and intended to promote products, services, or ideas, often without consent.

The term derives from spam, the unsolicited bulk messaging that became a problem with email and online forums in the 1990s. Spamlike content extends beyond email to comments, social media posts, and messaging apps, where automated or semi-automated accounts spread repetitive messages.

Typical spamlike features include generic greetings, mislabeled sender information, vague or exaggerated claims, time-limited offers, suspicious links, and poor or machine-generated text. The messages are usually short-term oriented and designed to bypass user skepticism. Differentiating spamlike from legitimate marketing or user-generated content can be difficult, as some messages may be legitimate but exhibit spamlike traits.

Mitigation relies on technical and procedural measures, such as spam filters that analyze headers, sender authentication protocols (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), content-based classifiers, and user reporting. Platform moderation, rate limiting, and verification requirements help reduce exposure to spamlike content.
