Sottotetto is the architectural space directly under the roof of a building, lying above the top floor and following the roof’s angle. In many houses it serves as storage and is often characterized by sloping ceilings, irregular walls, and limited headroom near the eaves. The term can denote both a non-habitable attic and, when altered to meet local standards, a living space.

Differences exist between non-habitable and habitable attic spaces. Sottotetto non abitabile refers to an attic intended for storage or technical use, typically with insufficient height for regular occupancy. Sottotetto abitabile denotes an attic that has been or can be converted into living space, usually requiring adequate standing height, natural light via windows or dormers, proper insulation, ventilation, and safe access by stairs.

A related term is mansarda, often used to describe a habitable attic space built under the roof, sometimes featuring dormers or skylights. In everyday language, mansarda and sottotetto abitabile are sometimes used interchangeably, though technically mansarda refers to a specific form of habitable attic.

Soppalco, or mezzanine, is a distinct element: an intermediate floor within a room that does not necessarily extend across the entire attic height and is not necessarily under the roof.

Access and regulation: access is usually via stairs or ladders. Converting a sottotetto to living space may require permits and compliance with height, safety, and energy standards, which vary by jurisdiction and local regulations.
