Sorubim are a group of large, long-whiskered catfish belonging to the family Pimelodidae. The term "sorubim" is commonly used to refer to several species within the genera Pseudoplatystoma, Sorubim, and Megalodoras. These fish are native to South American freshwater systems, including the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná basins.

Distinguishing features of sorubim include their elongated, flattened bodies, prominent barbels (whiskers) that extend far back from the mouth, and a distinctive spotted or striped coloration. The patterns can vary significantly between species and even within different life stages of the same species. Their large size makes them a significant predator in their native habitats.

Sorubim are carnivorous and feed on a variety of prey, including smaller fish, crustaceans, and even small amphibians and reptiles. They are often found in deeper channels and slower-moving waters, utilizing their barbels to detect prey in murky conditions. Many species are of considerable interest to recreational anglers due to their size and fighting ability.
